The Experience
The experience for us is more than just the visual. It’s totally about the evolutionary journey. Take a Banksia Tree as an example. She blossoms into this incredible yet unique array of flowers. These flowers then slowly transform into seed bearing cones. These cones have seed pods that slowly open and spread their seed when the time is right. Once the germination task is complete, the cone falls to the ground and rots. What I do is I take this cone just as she is about to die and turn her into something beautiful again. And so the life cycle of the Banksia is not only respected, but sculptured in such a way that the memory remains.
The Method
I ethically take the finest product from the Australian bush and assess how best to capture it’s unique beauty. I’ll often use epoxy resins and tints to achieve an appealing yet honest outcome. This means hand making specific moulds and pressurising these moulds via a complex chamber process over 2-3 days; timing is based on air temperature. Preparation is the key. Natural items need to be dried in ovens and thoroughly cleaned. I can’t use wet natives that either have laid on the ground for too long, or that are riddled with mould or disease. So I spend hundreds of hours in the Australian bush, carefully selecting and only take what I use. The native timbers I use are 100% authentic and kiln dried. The biggest challenge I have is the chemical reaction of the epoxy resin and thermal cracking. It’s a painstakingly complex job as a artist, well before it gets to the lathe. From the lathe the products are shaped, sanded, polished and coated.
